Therefore, it is to consciousness you must turn; for it is theonlyfoundation on which the phenomena of life can be explained.If we accept the ideaof afirst cause, it would fol­low that theevolution of that cause could never result in anything foreign toitself. Thatis, if the first cause-substance is light, all its evolutions, fruits,andmanifestationswould remain light. The first cause-substance being consciousness, allitsevolutions, fruits, and phenomena must remain consciousness.

All thatcould beobserved would be a higher or lower form or variation of the samething. Inother words, if your consciousness is the only reality, it must also bethe only substance. Consequently, what appears toyou ascircum­stances, conditions,and even material objects are really only the products of your ownconsciousness.Nature, then, as a thing or a complex of things external to your mind,must berejected. You and your environment cannot be regarded as existingseparately.You and your world are one.Therefore, you mustturn fromthe objective appearance of thingsto the subjective center of things, yourconsciousness, if youtrulydesire to know the cause of the phenomena of life, and how to use thisknowledge to realize your fondest dreams. In the midst of the apparentcontradic­tions, antagonisms, and contrasts of your life, thereis only oneprinciple at work, only your conscious­nessoperating.Difference does notconsist in vari­ety of substance, but in variety of arrangementofthe samecause-substance, your consciousness.The world moves withmotivelessnecessity.

By this is meant thatit has no motive of its own, but is under the necessity of manifestingyour concept, the arrangement of yourmind, and your mind is always arranged in the image of allyoubelieve andconsent to as true. The rich man, poor man, beg­garman orthief are not differentminds, but differ­ent arrangements of the same mind, in thesamesense that apiece of steel when magnetized differs not in substance from itsdemagnetizedstate but in the arrangement and order of its molecules. A singleelectronrevolving in a specified orbit consti­tutes the unit ofmagnetism.When a pieceof steel or anything else is demagnetized, the revolving electrons havenotstopped. Therefore, the mag­netism has not gone out ofexistence.There is onlya rearrangement of the particles, so that they pro­duce nooutsideorperceptible effect. When par­ticles are arranged at random,mixedup in alldirections, the substance is said to be demagne­tized; but whenparticles aremarshaled in ranks so that a number of them face in one direction, thesubstance is a magnet.
